Overfill protection with fuel stop system
Krampitz safety features Part 7: Overfill protection with fuel stop system
When filling gas stations, it often happens that tanks become overfilled and overflow. This is mainly due to an overfill protection device that is missing or does not work reliably enough.
Overflowing cannot happen at Krampitz gas stations because our gas stations optionally have the best overfill protection in the industry: a combination of automatic shutdown of the transfer pump and an additional shutoff of the fuel supply line using a motorized ball valve. So a double protection against overcrowding.
Construction mechanic Clemens Nitz explains to us how the Krampitz overfill protection works and how the components interact.
O Ton Clemens Nitz
“This is our overfill protection system with an integrated motorized ball valve. The overfill protection is screwed into the roof and is located in the tank chamber. It runs at an operating temperature of 45 degrees. It has a little cone in here. It's always heated up. If the medium that is filled in at average room temperature touches this pin, the resistance inside increases and the overfill protection sends a signal to the evaluation unit. This reacts immediately and tells the motor ball valve to close.”
We'll try that out right away.

“The overfill protection comes into contact with the medium and sends a signal to the evaluation unit. This goes to the motor ball valve and it closes and interrupts the filling process.”
When the PTC thermistor is wetted with medium, the sensor is cooled and the electrical resistance value increases.
The filling line is therefore closed and overfilling of the tank is impossible.
In addition to closing the filling line, the transfer pump, either in our gas station or in the tanker, is also automatically switched off. The tank truck pump is switched off via a signal cable that the tank truck driver connects to the overfill protection socket. If the overfill protection triggers the signal, the pump stops and the filling process is completed.
This system is extremely robust and safe and has been installed millions of times in tank farms worldwide.
Here we will also show you how switching off works in an experiment.
O Ton Clemens Nitz
“This is the overfill protection with the tanker plug. The tanker plug has a resistance. And as soon as the overfill protection comes into contact with medium, the resistance goes to zero and the tanker is switched off.”
Switching off the transfer pump via the signal plug! and shutting off the filling line using a motorized ball valve! – this is double protection against overcrowding and makes Krampitz gas stations so safe.
Krampitz tank system. Cubic good.
