Krampitz’s large tank farm – cubically good!

Our storage tank containers are most commonly used as diesel or heating oil tanks. We also produce storage tank containers for gasoline, kerosene, crude oil, heavy oil, transformer oil, or urea.

The majority of storage tank containers are based on Minotaur dimensions 20ft HC, 40ft HC (HighCube) in international ISO dimensions.

Recently, Krampitz has received an increasing number of orders for oversized containers with a volume of 75.000 to 96.000 liters. These containers are produced under the system name "Zeus." They are 3.000 mm wide, 12.000 or 15.000 mm long, and have a high cube height of 2.900 mm.

For large storage volumes exceeding 50.000 or 100.000 liters of a medium, we combine several containers of the same size to form a tank farm. For total volumes up to 500.000 liters , we use the 40ft HC Minotaur series; for volumes over 500.000 liters, we use the 50ft Zeus series.

A large tank farm consists of a centrally located administrator container and up to 10 worker storage tank containers with special tank farm equipment. Five storage tank containers are installed on each of the two long sides of the central container.

The central container (administrator) – structure and function

The central container has a large, double-walled receiving and output tank in the middle. The receiving/pump section is integrated on one end, while the output section is located on the opposite end.

The pump section is equipped with two 1.000-liter pumps (1.000 liters per minute delivery rate). The pipeline routes for filling the storage tanks with fuel and for extracting fuel from the storage tanks are also electronically controlled via a central control unit.

The selection of storage tank containers is automatic via the central control system , which opens or closes the installed motor valves on the selected storage tanks. The fill levels of the individual container storage tanks can also be accessed via the central control system.

The pump section contains a 4-inch dry coupling to which the tank trucks connect upon delivery . The transfer pumps then use this coupling to draw the fuel from the tank trucks and transfer it to the receiving tank.

The dispensing section is equipped with a 2-inch loading arm for flow rates up to 500 liters per minute and a 1 1/2-inch hose reel with a dispensing nozzle for delivering 150 liters per minute to vehicles. A fuel dispenser can also be installed for dispensing control.

The battery storage tank container – structure and function

The battery storage tank containers are installed on both sides of the central container, with up to five units on each side. With a maximum suction line length of approximately 20 meters horizontally, the centrally installed transfer pump can operate smoothly without suction problems (cavitation). Of course, the piping system must be primed by pouring water during initial commissioning. After that, the pumps operate without any issues.

A niche is integrated into the end wall of the battery storage tank . This niche accommodates the filling and suction manifolds , which run through it. These manifolds hydraulically connect all storage tanks to the central unit. From these manifolds, connecting pipes run via T-fittings to the respective storage tanks, each equipped with an electric ball valve. These ball valves are controlled by the central control unit of the central container . The central control unit allows the operator to select the desired tank for filling or emptying.

A central control module , which works in conjunction with the central control unit, is installed in the niche. This contains the electronic overfill protection for the tank, the evaluation of the electrical level indicator, as well as the fuses and relays for the motorized ball valves and the lighting, and the light switches for the interior and exterior lighting.

Use of battery storage for large consumers

Fuels and other consumables are delivered, stored, and used here . A tank truck receiving area is required next to the tank farm. The delivered goods are then dispensed towards the industrial plant.

We distinguish between single-media and multi-media large tank farms. Single-media large tank farms are the previously described battery-type large tank farms , meaning one medium in a battery. Multi-media large tank farms consist of a storage tank container with simplified receiving and discharging technology installed on both ends of the tank body. This prevents the mixing of different media.

The operators of large tank farms are:

Large consumers such as power plants
Manufacturers such as specialty refineries and chemical manufacturers
Fuel and chemical suppliers
Logistics company for fuels and chemicals

Here, media such as fuels, additives, and chemicals are delivered, stored, refined in production, stored again, and delivered to customers.

In addition to the tank farm, the tank truck receiving section and output section are required.

Fuel and chemical suppliers

Industrial supply companies have large central warehouses, but often also decentralized buffer or distribution warehouses. The difference lies in the smaller storage volumes per medium, but the large number of media stored.

The central warehouse can store up to 1 million liters of a single medium. The buffer warehouse typically holds 50.000 or 100.000 liters of a single medium.

For the central warehouse, dedicated receiving and dispatch sections with extensive equipment are installed. For the multi-media buffer storage facility, receiving and dispatch equipment is installed in the machine compartment of each storage tank. This ensures that all the necessary technology for tank farm logistics is available in a very compact space.
